inside look: what we asked the artists to do — their own Tamil-American individuality šŸŽ¶

The ar•ram•bam tape is not just an album. It’s the story of Tamil American self-discovery—told through music, lived through community.

The idea began with a question: what does it mean to be Tamil American today? The artists on this project were invited to answer that question not just with words, but with sound, with rhythm, with stories only they could tell.

At its heart, The Tape is about duality—the push and pull of two worlds. Each track asks something different:

- How do we hold on to our culture while living in a new environment?

- How did others see us when we showed up as Tamil?

- What inspiration came from our roots—and what came from outside of them?

- How do we bring both together into something entirely new?

The album unfolds like a concept story, moving stage by stage through the Tamil American experience. Carnatic roots greet the listener in the opening, while rap, hip-hop, RnB, and trap take over to show moments of confidence, confusion, loss, and rediscovery. By the end, it becomes a celebration: the best of both worlds, intertwined and undeniable.

Each artist brought their own perspective to this journey, but together it forms something larger than any one of us.

This is not an individual story. It’s a collective one. These artists were chosen because of their sound, their confidence, and their willingness to share their voices with the world.

The Tape was created to build a space for Tamil artists beyond the traditional systems—beyond the rules of the movie industry, beyond the expectations of what Tamil music ā€œshouldā€ sound like. This is about freedom. It’s about honesty. It’s about showing up as yourself.

That’s what makes this project powerful: every artist is being exactly who they are, and together, they’re shaping a Tamil American world in music that hasn’t been heard before.

popup live music performances from artists on the tape.

there’s a new genre taking form, and it’s the Tamil American sound. and, our goal is to create spaces for the Tamil American sound to be heard, amplify, and grow.

in striving for that goal, we’re excited to be presenting a pop-up live show: our ar•ram•bam records artist showcase in NYC — a live music experience to showcase the artists on the tape and their individual artistry.

each artist will perform their own individual set of music, and then as a collective, we will perform tracks from the ar•ram•bam tape. the night will follow with an after-party with DJs.
